今回、カルカッタで出会った、Khadiは衝撃でした。
“Khadi”は、ヒンディ語で”手で紡がれ、手で織られた生地”を意味します。
おもにコットンで作られていて、夏は風通しのよい生地がすずしく、冬はあたたかいのです。
Khadiは、インドの独立に深く関わっています。
独立の父と呼ばれる、ガンジーは、「スワデシ（国産品）の無いスワラジ（独立）は、生命の無いただの”しかばね”にすぎない。」と書いたといいます。
自国の産業を確立し、自給自足をインドにもたらすことを目標に、ガンジーは自らKhadiを自分で紡ぎ織りはじめました。
ガンジーは政治的な独立そのものだけでなく
人々が他国の大量生産業に傾倒し自分たちでものを作り出す原動力を失って行くことに警鐘を鳴らしたのだろうと思います。
スタジオには、Khadiを紡ぐための糸車（カルチャ）があり、機織がありました。
Khadiを機械のように速く紡ぐことはできません。いわば、時間がつむがれています。
まさにガンジーは人間の手をはなれたところからものが大量に作られ
大量放棄されていく現実が、やがてじぶんたちを危機的な状況にもたらすことを理解してたのでしょうか。
インドの国旗をいつも何気なく見ていましたが、よく見ると真ん中に
描かれているのは糸車（カルチャ）そのものでした^-^
これだけの物語が、一枚の布に込められているなんて、
じぶんの仕事に対する考えが、熱くショートしたような瞬間でした〜
“Khadi” ,
“Khadi” means the cloth which is hand spun and had woven in Hindi, mainly it is made from cotton. It is very airy in Summer and warm enough in Winter.
Khadi is deeply connected with Independence of India in 1947.
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Independence of India is said that he wrote Swaraj (freedom) without Swadeshi (self reliance or self produced) is only a dead body with no life. He started to demonstrate spinning and weaving “Khadi” by himself to achieve his aim to bring “self sufficient” and their own industrial activity to nation of India.
It is no wonder that he was reminding Indian people they were loosing their self motivation to produce with their hands by relying on mass-production which was brought from overseas colonial ruler. His aim was not only political independence but self sufficiency for all of India.
In studio, there were a “Chakra (Spinning machine) ” to spin the threads and weaving machine made of wood and bamboo. With Khadi, we can not spin the threads in short time like machinery. So to say, it is like spinning time not just thread.
I always was looking at Indian national flag casually but I found that it was exactly one chakra which is placed in center of its flag symbolically.
It is rare to find such a story behind one type of cloth.
Learning about Khadi led to an ‘aah’ moment for me to understand India and its culture a little bit more. I hope to work with Kahadi for some of my products in the future.
