VEGANIEの新商品として、インドの絞り染めのストール製作をかんがえています。
そのためにはもう少し「染め」の過程を勉強したい・・・と考えていたところ、
染めに詳しい友人が「八王子に藍染めの職人さんがいらっしゃるので、体験しにいきませんか。」と誘ってくれました。
場所は八王子駅からバスに揺られて15分。よくある住宅地の一画に平屋の木造家屋がぽつんとあり、
玄関をはいると、藍の発酵したすっぱい香りがただよっています。
藍染めの職人として17代目になるご主人、野口さん。
江戸時代はお奉行様などの染め物を担当していた（！）という、先祖代々染め物職人。
物腰やわらかなお父さんは「最近は海外のお客さんも多くてね。インド？インドって何時間かかるの？」
と話が止まりませんでした。
藍染めの工程は、まずぬるま湯に布をつけ、その布を薄めの藍から順に浸けていきます。
季節や湿度で染め具合が変わるので、これが分かるまで何十年もかかるのだそう。
浸けたあと乾いていく布を眺めていると面白いことに、だんだんと色が淡い色から鮮やかな色に変わっていきます。
「夕焼けから日が沈んでいくさまを眺めているようですね。」とわたしが言うと
「そうだろ。きれいだろ。飽きないんだよ。」とご主人。
布が染まっていく早さや、風合いは毎日違ってみえるんでしょうね。
話が盛り上がり、息子さんの仕事場も見学させていただくことに。
息子さんは型染めの糊置きをされていらっしゃいました。この糊は、なんと餅米とぬかを混ぜたもの。
昔から続いているものは、すべて自然の知恵。あたり前だったものが、いまはこの糊を探すのも一苦労だそう。
ここで作られた反物は有名着物問屋に卸され、浴衣になるそうです。
お父さんに「ここで作られた浴衣、着ます！そして、また来ます！」そう約束して工房をあとにしたのでした。

My friend who is familiar with dyeing fabric kindly took me to an atelier of indigo dying in Hachioji Tokyo as she knew that I was thinking of produce some tie and dye stoles in future.
An atelier is located 10 min by bus from Hachioji station, people can not realize if it was a studio without introduction, it looked really normal cozy residence. In the moment of entering the atelier, I could smell particular fermented indigo, we finally could felt that we arrived.
The artisan of dyeing and block printing, his name is Mr. Noguchi and he is the 17th generation after his ancestor began their business. He is such a friendly person and very talkative, he kept asking me like “There are lots of guests from overseas lately, you are working in India? How long does it take? What is the main food? “.
Talking about the process of indigo dying, we start from dipping the fabric to the lukewarm water and dip into light colored indigo to deeper colored indigo in order.the color of indigo changes depends on the weather and humidity so Mr.Noguchi told me that it would take decades to understand this delicate adjustment. The scene that the color changes from light color to deeper and clear color while the fabric is drying, it reminds me of twilight during the sunset.
He kindly showed me another room for Japanese block print. It was a great timing that we could see his son was attaching the glue on cutting paper pattern. To my surprise, that glue was made from rice and rice bran. Everything in old age is made from nature!
I just decided to buy his fabric to make it into Yukata (Japanese Kimono in summer). It is a great investment to buy Kimono or yukata in Japan because it will last for next 2,3 generation.
