最近参加させていただいた、青山学院大学でのYOUPLID主催のワークショップでも
「生活の中で、どんなエシカルアイディア、エコアイディアがあるか、考えてみましょう！」
という質問を生徒さんに投げかけて、さまざまなアイディアと質問が、
生徒さんの中から出てきてとても嬉しかったのですが、
最近、オーストラリアに長くいた友人とお喋りをしていて、とても面白い話が出てきました。
彼女は20年前にオーストラリアにいたのですが、その頃からすでにオーストラリアでは
「エコ、サスティナブル」の認識が国民レベルで広がっていて、
彼女は、さまざまなビックリに出会ったそうです。
例えば、シャワーの横には砂時計が置かれていて、１分たったらシャワーをとりあえず止める。
台所のシンクの横には、コンポスト（生ゴミを堆肥に変えるボックス）が置いてある。
ボロボッロのTシャツをいつまでも着ている。
スーパーにはもちろん、レジ袋がない。笑
留学していた彼女は、それを「なんと遅れている！なんと古臭い！」
と感じてドン引きしたそうです〜。
でも、いま考えると、実は時代の最先端をいっていたのかもしれませんね。
今、私たちがカッコイイと思っている高層ビルも、都会な感じがする24時間コンビニも、
実は「ヒートアイランド現象」や「膨大な食べ物の廃棄」というさまざまな課題を抱えていて、
サスティナビリティという視点から見ると、もはや時代の先端ではないのかもしれません。
Recently I could have an opportunity to give a lecture to students of
Aoyama gakuin University through YOUPLID workshop.
In there, I asked students if they have any ethical / eco ideas that they are trying to do
for the sustainable life.
They kindly shared the ideas such as “carrying tumbler for coffee” or
“Sharing shopping bags at the supermarket in hometown”.
Speaking of eco ideas, I had a very interesting conversation with my friend
who has been in Australia 20 years ago.
She told me that Australian people already had high environmental awareness
at that time, lots of eco-actions were made by ordinary people.
For example, putting a sandglass while they take shower to stop the water
after a minute, they already had a compost next to a sink to put raw garbage or food scraps.
She told me that one of her friend was wearing tattered T shirts always
and that friend told her that it’s still wearable.
My friend told me that she was really put off that Australian people are
behind the time, society was not developed or modern as Japan was.
However when we talk about this story today after 20 years, we realized
that these experiences were not behind the times or uncool but very up-to-date
action and AWESOME!
So maybe now it’s the time to rethink what is outdated and up-to-date for us.
We regard skyscrapers and 24hrs convenience stores are symbol of modernism
but also we have to admit
we are facing “Urban heat island” and “massive food waste”, Industry
with lots of futility doesn’t seem to be modern anymore in sustainability perspective.
